I wrote this poem around the Winter Solstice of 2013, a year after the Mayan prophecy predicted the end of the world as we knew it. Of course, there were multiple interpretations of what that was to entail. Hollywood and the mainstream culture liked to equate the end with the apocalypse, while those in the consciousness community liked to think that December 21st, 2012 marked the end of an age of primitive human consciousness. When December 21st came and went and no one seemed to be either less alive or more evolved, there seemed to be a sort of head-shaking while many pondered that perhaps the cynics had been right.
However, the time did seem to mark the beginning of a revolution in consciousness, for over the last few years we have seen awareness raised about environmental, cultural, political, and socio-economic issues all over the world. Whether the energetic portal of 12/21/12 opened us to these revolutions, or we initiated them ourselves through our projections of what the energy was supposed to bring us remains to be determined, but I honestly don’t see how it matters. The shift is what’s important, as we move towards human enlightenment every day.
What I find most interesting is how we, over time, have come to redefine “enlightenment.” The word seems to mean something different to different people, and even now, two years after I wrote the poem, its meaning has changed for me again. So this poem attempts to capture “enlightenment” as it pertains to those in the consciousness community. Through a lingual odyssey we start with a concrete idea, only to lose ourselves and reemerge with a new understanding.
